My Internship Experience at Central Forensic Science Laboratory - CBI, New Delhi
Introduction
I recently had the incredible opportunity to intern at the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) - CBI in New Delhi, under the Directorate of Forensic Science Services (DFSS). This internship was a remarkable journey that allowed me to dive deep into the world of forensic science, particularly within the Fingerprint Division. Over the course of a month, I gained hands-on experience with real-life cases and learned the intricacies of forensic fingerprint analysis.
Learning the Basics
From the very first day, I was immersed in the meticulous world of fingerprint forensics. I learned how to handle and care for sensitive cases, an essential skill for any forensic professional. Each case begins with a standard procedure designed to ensure accuracy and integrity:
- Case Receiving: The process starts with the careful reception of cases, ensuring all documentation is in order.
- Case Opening: Once received, cases are opened methodically, ensuring no contamination occurs.
- Preliminary Examination: An initial examination to understand the nature of the evidence.
- Preparation of Photo Proforma: Detailed photographs of the evidence are taken to create a visual record.
- Examination: The core phase where fingerprints are carefully analyzed.
- Case Reporting: Finally, detailed reports are prepared based on the findings.
Hands-On Experience with Real Cases
During my internship, I dealt with numerous real-life cases, which provided invaluable practical experience. Each case brought its own set of challenges and learning opportunities. Handling cases from competitive exams like SSC and developing and recording fingerprints from various crime scenes were particularly enlightening. Due to government protocols, I cannot divulge specifics about these cases, but they offered a firsthand look at the critical role forensic science plays in the justice system.
Advanced Techniques and Expert Discussions
One of the highlights of my internship was the opportunity to discuss advanced forensic fingerprinting techniques with my guide and other senior forensic experts. I learned about the application of Raman spectroscopy in identifying overlapping fingerprints—a sophisticated method that enhances the accuracy of fingerprint analysis. Additionally, discussions on molecular fingerprinting broadened my understanding of the field's cutting-edge technologies.
Building Professional Relationships
Beyond the technical skills, this internship allowed me to build meaningful connections with various forensic experts and scientific officers. These relationships are invaluable, offering a network of professionals that I can reach out to for guidance and collaboration in the future.
Conclusion
My internship at CFSL-CBI was an enriching experience that has significantly shaped my understanding and appreciation of forensic science. The skills and knowledge I acquired, from handling real-life cases to learning advanced techniques, have prepared me for a future career in this fascinating field. I am grateful for the guidance and support of all the experts I worked with and look forward to applying what I have learned in my future endeavors.
